Pagodes de Cos Saint-Estèphe

Louis Gaspard d'Estournel named the chateau in 1811 when he founded it. The chateau quickly became well known and the quality was so internationally recognized that they chose not to sell the wine through Negociants - highly unusual in the 19th century. In fact, the wine became so popular in India that the castle exported much of its production there, and much of the inspiration for the design and architecture of the wine cellar and castle comes from India and Asia. Today, the château is owned by Michel Reybier - an enterprising businessman who owns properties in Champagne, Provence and Tokaji. Château Cos d'Estournel consists of 100 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The fields are located on the border with Pauillac, in the southernmost part of Saint-Estèphe. The vines have an average age of 40 years, with a micro-plot of Merlot vines dating back to 1915, where Cos has since 2018 made a micro-production of a cult wine - COS100. Just 2 barrels are made annually and only released in large formats, such as Jeroboam and Balthazar. All profits from the sale of these bottles go exclusively to charitable causes. The soil consists of clay, gravel, limestone and sand. However, there is a higher proportion of gravel and a lower proportion of clay than the neighboring properties. Located close to the Atlantic Ocean, with cool winds, Cos is often one of the last properties to harvest. The first vintage of Pagodes was 1994 and was originally called Marbuzet, after the vineyard of the same name. The grapes come from the Marbuzet field, but also from young vines at Châteauet, Cos d'Estournel. The quality has improved significantly over the last 15 years and today it is one of the best 2nd wines in terms of price and ratings. Translated using AI.
