    Mullineux Quartz Chenin Blanc

    The grapes for Quartz Chenin Blanc come from a single plot of over 34-year-old Chenin Blanc vines growing on a plot where the soil is rich in quartz at Kasteelberg. This plot of Chenin Blanc gives the best expression of Kasteelberg's quartz-rich soil - freshness and minerality. The wine is fermented with natural wild yeast in oak barrels and then aged for 11 months on the lees. The wine is bottled unfiltered. Quartz Chenin has a very mineral aroma with notes of ripe citrus fruit and spice. The minerality is echoed in the creamy flavour along with white peach and almonds. Nice fresh citrus dominated finish. Best served chilled at 12 degrees. Decanting is recommended if the wine is drunk in the first 4 years after the harvest year.

Located on the western side of the Kasteelberg on mostly quartz soils, it's a remarkable site that has produced a very taut, even austere wine with subtle oak, quince and apple flavours and real poise. 2018-28.

    The 2016 Quartz Chenin "Leliefontein" has a very perfumed bouquet of honeysuckle, dried peach, marmalade and light yellow plum. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, notes of yellow plum, mandarin, white pepper and hints of bitter lemon lending tension toward the finish. This would be my pick of the Mullineuxs' white 2016s. 2019 - 2032.
