The Margaux appellation is synonymous with elegance and expressiveness, and Kirwan is a classic example of this. In 1855, the château was granted Cru Classé status, and that same year the Godard family bought Kirwan. When Camille Godard died in 1882, he donated the château to the city of Bordeaux. In 1926, the château was bought by Armand Schÿler and has been in the Schÿler family ever since. Armand Schÿler's late grandson, the Danish Consul in Bordeaux Jean-Henri Schÿler, moved permanently into Château Kirwan and played a crucial role in promoting this wine in Denmark. The quality has been stable for many years, and from 1991, when Michel Rolland was hired as a consultant, the quality began to take off. In 2007, Philippe Delfaut was hired as technical director at the château, an experienced gentleman with 11 years of experience at the cult château Château Palmer. This appointment, along with an investment of 60 million kroner for the total modernization of the wine cellar, created a new era for Château Kirwan. 37 tulip-shaped, 50 hectolitre cement tanks stood new in the state-of-the-art cellar - installed by the same company that completely renovated the cellar of Château Cheval Blanc. The château garners sky-high ratings, year after year, and still at an affordable price when compared to the expensive wines from the appellation. A must buy for the Bordeaux lover!
