    Mullineux Quartz Chenin Blanc

    The grapes for Quartz Chenin Blanc come from a single plot of over 34-year-old Chenin Blanc vines growing on a plot where the soil is rich in quartz at Kasteelberg. This plot of Chenin Blanc gives the best expression of Kasteelberg's quartz-rich soil - freshness and minerality. The wine is fermented with natural wild yeast in oak barrels and then aged for 11 months on the lees. The wine is bottled unfiltered. Quartz Chenin has a very mineral aroma with notes of ripe citrus fruit and spice. The minerality is echoed in the creamy flavour along with white peach and almonds. Nice fresh citrus dominated finish. Best served chilled at 12 degrees. Decanting is recommended if the wine is drunk in the first 4 years after the harvest year.

It has a very different bouquet compared to the Granite Chenin Blanc: much earthier and broody, pressed white flowers, then hazelnut and even a hint of Thai fish oil. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, harmonious and perhaps showing a little more nuance and personality compared to the Granite counterpart. Here, there is fine energy and tension on the finish, with a touch of spice lingering on the finish.
