    Rall Red

    This impressive red wine is a blend of Syrah and Grenache. The grapes originate from Swartland (Paardeberg). Donovan Rall likes to harvest the grapes as early as possible to maintain focus on freshness, the grapes are pressed partly stemmed, partly in whole clusters. Fermentation takes place using wild yeast. The grapes are hand-pressed in a small manually operated press and aged for 22 months in 2-year-old French oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered. The wine has an impressive bouquet, lots of bold, ripe fruit rushes towards you with hints of white pepper. The flavour is dark and acidic with a huge complexity and an underlying, lively acidity.

The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, smooth in texture with layers of tobacco-tinged, dark red fruit towards the structured finish. This will need 3-4 years in bottle. At the moment I just want to see a little more finesse that was conveyed by the 2012 and 2013.
