2014 Pechstein Grand Cru Pfalz Dr. Bürklin-Wolf

The Bürklin family has classified their wines in four levels, and they rank the Riesling from the Pechstein vineyard on a par with a Grand Cru from Burgundy, i.e. the absolute top. It is marked with a G.C. on the wine label. The Pechstein vineyard is located near the town of Forst and its soil is rich in basalt, which makes the vineyard look black (pechstein means "tar stone"). Wines from the vineyard are often characterised by a great richness, because the basalt absorbs the sun's heat. Pechstein Riesling G.C. offers a classic Riesling nose with freshness, fine citrus and a touch of petroleum. The flavour is dry, powerful and very full-bodied. The aftertaste is long and satisfying. A very masculine Riesling and a great accompaniment to festive meals with turbot, for example.
