    Gigondas

    The southeastern Gigondas vineyards have a chalky and clayey subsoil and are on average over 50-years-old. The bouquet is almost explosive of black fruit with hints of spices and garrigues, the flavour is very complex with great roundness and ripeness in the fruit, the wine finishes perfectly balanced with rounded tannins.

    One of the wines of the vintage might be the 2014 Gigondas, and at present, it looks just as good as the more expensive La Colline release. Checking in as a blend of 72% Grenache, 18% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre and Cinsault, this beauty will see 18 months in a combination of barrels, demi-muid, and concrete tank before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Notes of sweet black raspberries, red plums, roasted Provencal herbs and macerated cherries all flow from this medium to full-bodied, ripe, forward Gigondas that has beautiful tannin and a clean finish. I suspect it will show beautifully on release, but should also age gracefully on its balance.
