    SAINT-JOSEPH: Guigal has taken over the Grippat cult domaine in Saint-Joseph. Now combining Guigal's expertise with Gripppat's amazing vineyards ..... it can hardly surprise anyone that the result is world-class. There are two qualities: the "ordinary" (which gives most other producers' wines a run for their money) is simply called "Guigal", while the top qualities go under the name "Ancienne Domaine Grippat". Guigal Saint Joseph is beautifully dark in the glass. The aroma has dark nuances of blackberry, blackcurrant, cedar, moor, flint and vanilla. The flavour is soft and full-bodied with great purity in the long aftertaste of ripe berry fruit. A modern take on 21st century Saint-Joseph wines - Guigal is setting the standard again.

Lush, spice-accented black and blue fruit flavors are brightened by a peppery quality and a hint of candied violet. Closes sappy, sweet and very long, gaining shape and grip from fine-grained tannins. In a fairly dense, rich style for the vintage, and built to age.

    A wine that's already on the market, the medium to full-bodied 2013 St Joseph sports a ruby color and outstanding notes of blackberries, currants, olive and a hint of violets. It's shed a good portion of the baby fat it showed from barrel and needs 2-3 years of bottle age, but will evolve for a decade after that.

    Dark-spiced plums, dark chocolate, some cardamom, woody spices and hints of pepper all have their say here along with a dark-tar and stony edge. There's plenty of tannin to this quite rustic style of wine. Best now through to 2020+. All sourced from the southerly part of the appellation and a mix of purchased grapes, own vineyards and purchased wines.
