Puligny Montrachet 1. Cru Champs Canet

Again there is a hint of reduction that isn't so strong as to really compromise the expressive nose that is both more elegant and more complex with its pretty array of pure citrus, acacia blossom, apple, pear and exotic tea scents. There is excellent volume but also plenty of vibrancy to the medium-bodied flavors that retain a lovely sense of detail on the refined, sappy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This will need a few years to further develop depth on the finish but the underlying material should be more than adequate to do so. Worth considering.

The 2013 Puligny- Montrachet 1er Cru Champ-Canet has a reserved and tightly-wound bouquet. There is impressive mineral tension here, but it clearly does not want to come out and play for another three of four years. The palate is tensile on the entry with sharp, sour lemon and orange rind notes. Here, there is a stronger spicy element coming through with a dab of fresh ginger lining the finish. This is turning into a feisty Champ Canet...and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pale yellow. Very ripe, open-knit aromas of peach, apricot and brioche. Conveys a slightly exotic aspect and a suggestion of surmaturité to its flavors of apricot, papaya and honey, but bracing acidity keeps this very concentrated wine in focus. Finishes with a tannic firmness and a lingering note of orange zest. The yield here was just 25 hectoliters per hectare, essentially identical to 2014. This wine will need time in bottle to communicate its full personality.
