    Craighall Chardonnay

    Craighall is Ata Rangi's top Chardonnay, which comes from older low-yielding vines, the oldest of which are more than 30-years-old. The Craighall field is located centrally in the vineyard and consists mainly of sandy soil, which provides perfect drainage for the vines. The grapes are hand-harvested and pressed in whole clusters. The wine is fermented in French Barriques (about 25% new) with the natural wild yeast from the grapes, and then aged "sur lie" in French barrels for 12 months. The final wine is exceptionally characterful and complex. The bouquet offers intriguing nuances of nectarine, peach and intense citrus. The flavour is complex with layers upon layers of fruit and mineral facets.

Very tight-knit on the silken textured, medium bodied palate, it has a great line of acid and a very long mineral finish.

    All Mendoza clone therefore more intense flavours. Whole bunch pressed straight to 300-litre barrels. High solids retained in the ferment and not much lees stirring. Because it was a warm vintage and they wanted to keep the wine fresh, malo was blocked on 50% of the wine. Subtle, fresh and lightly smoky, yet with plenty of ripe citrus flavour making the foundation. Dry and just slightly stony, the finish has a mild saltiness and a savoury quality, the creamy texture coming back at the end. (JH) Drink 2015-2018.
