El Gran Enemigo

Intense Cabernet Franc dominated wine from high-altitude vineyards in Lújan de Cuyo in Mendoza's famous wine region, over 1000 metres above sea level. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 35% of which are new. The vinification is also similar to the technique used for the famous French Cru Classé wine from Bordeaux. The wine has an intense dark colour, almost purple at the edges, a big bouquet of ripe black berries and a touch of spice, a complex flavour with great fullness that finishes soft and fruity.

The 2011 El Gran Enemigo is a blend of some 65% Cabernet Franc with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Malbec from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley. The result is quite Bordelais, in a Vieux Château Certan or Lafleur style that is quite spicy and fresh. The nose has lots of cracked peppercorns, a touch of raspberry leaf and then something earthy akin to graphite and pencil lead. Serious, balanced and extremely fresh on the palate, it has a ray of acidity that crosses the core of the wine and adds electricity. The tannins are very fine ant there is clear minerality. The destemmed grapes are fermented and matured in different-sized oak vats where the wine also ages for around 18 months. Very fairly priced for the quality it delivers. 4,000 bottles produced.

93 point

This co- fermented blend of Cabernet Franc with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot was made with 100% whole bunches and is pushing the boundaries of Argentinean wine. Aromatic, spcicy and red fruited with old vine richness, very little oak influence and a peppery lift. Drink: 2015- 19.

91 point

(73% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec): Bright, deep ruby-red. Sweet, inviting aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice pastille and bitter chooolate. Tightly wound and youthfully bracing, showing attractive inner-mouth tension and floral lift but also a strong acid spine that calls for patience. A very serious, ageworthy Argentine Cabernet Franc.

90 point

This red features pure-tasting flavors of raspberry, cherry tart and boysenberry that are fresh and well-structured, with accents of hot stone midpalate, followed by notes of sage cream on the finish. Drink now through 2018.
