Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello is often referred to as Italian wine's most distinguished "ambassador" and Altesino belongs to the premier league of Brunello producers. The vineyard, which is a castle dating from the 16th century, is located in Montalcino. The wine is made in the cellars of the historic Palazzo Altesi, which is over 500-years-old. The first Brunello was made at the castle in 1972. The vineyard also owns a third of the famous Montesoli hill, where precisely Sangiovese Grosso thrives optimally. In the 1980s, production methods were modernised and quality rose to new heights. Altesino Brunellos are still made in the traditional way, in large Slavonian oak barrels. Perfectionism reigns everywhere in the winemaking and nothing is left to chance. The result is top quality with respect for tradition. The bouquet is filled with aromas of ripe fruit and a touch of violet and vanilla, the flavour is concentrated and bold, and just goes on and on. An aristocratic Brunello in every way! Preferably decant 1 hour before serving.

The 2010 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine which immediately impresses with is wonderful freshness and purity. It instantly releases pretty aromas of sweet red berries and plum which are mixed with spices, licorice, citrus peel and fresh floral. This elegant and classy Brunello is structured around fine silky tannins that are beautifully integrated into the seamless texture that carries on all the way through the pretty finish. This is a remarkable showing from Altesino that will only get better with some additional bottle age. (Best 2017-2029).

Wonderful decadent aromas of musk, orange peel and plum follow through to a full body, with soft tannins and a long and rich finish. Salty and savory. Layers of gorgeous fruit. Drink or hold.

Mid ruby. Smells like red- fruit squash. Strawberry sweetness and blackcurrant fruit pastille. Texture is juicy but the tannins are quite thick, even though they are soft. I find it a little too much like a fruit sweet but it's certainly fresh and bright. The tannins are fine but there is a slight bitterness on the finish. (JH)

Altesino's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino stands proud among its peers. No other wine I tasted among the new releases in Montalcino achieves this unique level of aromatic finesse and distinction. The bouquet is almost purely floral in character with a strong emphasis on pressed rose petal, dried violets and potpourri. The fruit tones are less emphatic and include bright cherry and red currant. In the mouth, the wine's compressed texture is accented by fennel seed and licorice. the 2009 vintage had more power and heat, but this version shows elegant restraint.

Altesino's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is fresh, lively and very nicely balanced throughout. Sweet red berries, mint, sage and cinnamon lift from the glass. The 2010 is effortless and totally delicious today, although the flavors are quite fruit-driven. Readers who are looking for more complexity will want to age the 2010 for at least a few years, but it is already quite appealing, even at this early stage. - Antonio Galloni.

Menthol, leather, pressed flower and woodland berry aromas mingle with a balsamic note. The delineated palate delivers sour red cherry, sage and a note of baking spice alongside youthfully austere but fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. This is more about finesse and balance but it should also develop more complexity over the next few years.
