Alter Berg is Heinrich's best Blaufränkisch, which is produced by a meticulous selection of the best grapes. The wine has an almost blue-violet colour with a fresh bouquet of red fruit, spices and a touch of orange. The flavour is juicy, with good body and fine fruit sweetness, a spontaneous wine that charms by its enormous fruit. A wine with significant ageing potential. Blaufränkisch is one of Austria's most widely planted blue grape varieties. The grape's name is thought to derive from the Middle Ages, when the reign of the Frankish king Charlemagne allowed quality grape varieties to replace plantings of inferior grape varieties. The name of the Blaufränkisch grape was thus supposed to indicate that it was the blue grape favoured by the Frankish king. Under the right conditions, Blaufränkisch can produce refined wines with considerable substance and minerality.
