2017 Pinot Gris Cuvée Sainte Catherine Domaine Weinbach

The 2017 Domaine Weinbach 'Cuvée Sainte Catherine' Pinot Gris is a sensational effort. On the nose this takes on melon and wet stone tones with hints of candied mango. The minerality on the palate excites with citrus rind, melon and Pink Lady apple flavors that all build beautifully in the glass. Intense and showing wonderful richness and tension, this gorgoeus wine should continue to well over the course of the next decade. 2019-2033.

A unusually peachy pinot gris with aromas of jasmine and floral honey, making it seem a lot lighter than it really is. This is all thanks to the fresh acidity and just a hint of sweetness. A lovely, long and bright mineral finish. Drink or hold. Made from biodynamically grown grapes.

Not produced every year, the 2017 Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste Catherine is very intense in its aromatics. Lush and intense on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and sweet but structured Pinot with lingering salinity.

Good yellow-gold. Complex aromas of pear and baking spices, plus a pungent floral note. Enters round and juicy then turns mineral and racy; the high-acid mouthfeel extends the flavors on the extremely long back end. Elegant Pinot Gris, less showy and opulent than many Pinot Gris wines made at Domaine Weinbach over the years; I personally much preferred those, but this is perhaps more in tune with modern tastes. Will prove lovely paired with oily fish dishes (salmon, for example) and porcini risotto too. In this vintage, no grapes from the Markrain were used to make this wine, because they neither added something specific nor improved the blend (those grapes were used instead to make the 2017 Pinot Gris Laurence).

A silky, medium-bodied white, with juicy acidity and a pretty mix of chopped apple, slivered almond, peach skin and ground ginger. Lingering finish.
