Bordeaux 2008: "an excellent and in some cases, a great vintage" citat Parker
Robert Parker: "It did not take me long to realize that the 2008 vintage was dramatically better than I had expected. It had all the qualities that make an excellent and in some cases, a great vintage so special.? ?These factors - the long, historic hang-time, the cooler as well as drier than normal growing conditions during the critical months of June, July, August, and September, the perfect dry, warm July and late September and October, as well as very small yields, all resulted in a vintage of at least excellent quality. In some cases, there are wines as profound as 2005. In short, the vintage is vastly superior to 2007, 2006, 2004, 2003 (with some exceptions in that unusual vintage), 2002, 2001, and 1999."
Robert Parker om de enkelte områder: Højrebred er udsædvanlig stærk: "There is no question that Pomerol seems to be the epicenter of many extraordinary wines. I would even go so far as to say the 2008 Pomerols eclipse/surpass the quality of the 2005s, 2001s, and 2000s. It is an amazing vintage in Pomerol, and this carries over to some of the finest wines made in the satellite appellation of Lalande de Pomerol. St.-Emilion" Om Medoc: Some great wines were produced in the Médoc, yet styles can differ.
Steven Tanzers International Wine Cellar: "Vintage 2008 in Bordeaux will long be remembered as one of the most pleasant surprises in decades for claret lovers. Against all odds the wines are far better than the weather during the growing season had any right to provide. Producers had to put up with spring frosts, hailstorms, much less summer sunshine than normal, and cool temperatures all along, yet the wines are, for the most part, quite successful. In fact, it is in vintages like ?08 that Bordeaux reasserts itself as the most magical place in the world for outstanding, perfumed cabernet-and merlot-based wines, not by chance referred to as Bordeaux blends the world over. While there are great terroirs elsewhere in the world for cabernet sauvignon (certainly Napa Valley), cabernet franc (the Loire) and merlot (parts of Tuscany), a year like ?08 really does showcase the way only Bordeaux can pack so much flavor into wines with medium body, firm acidity and moderate alcohol. "
Jancis Robinson: "This will be a vintage that will be particularly fascinating to monitor as it evolves. I think it would be fair to say that how the 2008s tasted in Bordeaux in April surprised literally thousands of us."
Decanter: "The tendency in Bordeaux is to treat each vintage as favouring either the Left or Right Bank. In 2008 it is by no means clear and the great difference will be between those estates that oversaw every aspect of their vineyards during the problematic growing season, who could pick each plot at the optimum moment, and those who did not and were obliged to harvest early. The smallness of the crop benefited the Merlot, the lateness of the harvest favoured the Cabernet Sauvignon, and since the Left Bank is a blend of both grapes - the higher up the scale you go, the more Cabernet dominates - the vintage here was surprisingly successful. Its hallmarks are very dark colours, a vigorous fruit combining flesh and firmness, a freshness of acidity and strong but not hard tannins. The weather did not dominate the vintage, as it did in 2003, for it allowed the vines to recover and the grapes to ripen and reflect their terroir.
On the Right Bank, there was consistency and excitement, the Merlot and Cabernet Franc providing seductive aromas and flavours combined with structure and concentration as well. Like the unexpected quality, the style of the wines was a surprise. Late harvested vintages (like 2007) usually mean softer, earlier drinking wines but the 2008s have a compelling fragrance and texture combined with acidity and ripe tannins for ageing. The wines are ripe and modern, richer than 2004 and 2006, not far from 2005 but less powerful all the same."
Wine Spectator: "The 2008 vintage was challenging for red wines, though undoubtedly a better one than 2007. Cool, wet weather in May and June kept yields low, but was followed by a warm, sunny July. Then August and early September were gray and damp; ripening was uneven and mildew threatened the grapes. But the last three weeks of September were warm and sunny, potentially saving the day for many producers. The best of the resulting wines show lovely aromas, fruity palates, silky tannins and bright acidity that gives them long, lively finishes. However, the weaker reds can be light, green and acidic. The dry whites can also very good but may have strong acidity and not be as well balanced as those from 2007 and 2006. For the sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac, the harvest was one of the latest in memory for Sauternes, but the grapes that were picked at the right time carried plenty of noble rot, assuring rich and spicy young sweet wines. The wines are generally good, with some exceptional examples, but not on par overall with the best vintages, such as 2005."
Quarin: "As you now know, 2008 is a very heterogeneous vintage. In fact, it remains difficult to prepare a synthesis. Take that in terms of regions, Pomerol dominates. One will also remember that in terms of discrimination, the work of men as well as the personal application played a major role. I am often amazed by the wines from the mid range, which are impeccably made. I found some of them in each appellation, as you saw in Pomerol and St. Emilion. You will also discover these within unclassified growths from Pessac Léognan and Graves. Luchey Halde and Seguin jostle hierarchies.
I had higher expectations for wines from the top level. Their performance has undoubtedly found a limit imposed by the nature of the 2008 vintage.
To determine the tasting value of this vintage, below is a comparison of the number of ratings above or equal to 16.75 (on the 20 points scale) or 91 (on the 100 point scale), assigned by vintage and to red wines only (thus excluding dry and sweet white wines).
2008 : 27 wines 2007 : 19 wines 2006 : 30 wines 2005 : 55 wines 2004 : 24 wines 2003 : 22 wines 2002 : 20 wines
In general, for great wines, the 2008 vintage is ranking between 2006 and 2004. However, the highest level in 2008 is limited to a rating of 17.5 // 94. It does neither reach top ratings from 2006 nor the 2004 vintage which were estimated at 18 // 95 during futures, or even that of 2002 (17.75 ? 18 // 95) where Ausone, Lafite, Latour and Palmer already showed brilliant."
Om priserne:
Som tidligere omtalt har debatten om prissætningen I år fyldt mere end normalt. Det har fra alle sider været et udtalt ønske om, at priserne skulle sænkes hvis Primeurkampagnen for 2008 skulle lykkedes.
Parker om priserne: "I do believe prices must ultimately decline if proprietors expect to have any success in the futures campaign for 2008. Certainly the quality is so high that these wines will ultimately sell, whether they are pre-sold in barrel, or eventually sold in the bottle. Bordeaux lovers and serious wine consumers throughout the world will adore the vintage's finest wines. That's a given. But at what price is impossible to predict. I am hoping that the leaders who will set the market prices, in this case the first-growths, will come out at much lower prices than in recent years. Whether they do or they don't, and whether other producers follow suit or not, ultimately has nothing to do with the quality of the exciting 2008s I tasted. In the end, it is always about the wine, and in vino veritas says it as well as possible."
Jancis Robinson om priserne: "I say bravo to the first growths for leading the market down in price and for apparently getting the price about right, to judge from market activity. UK merchants were reporting last week that they had already sold more 2008s than they had of 2007 Bordeaux primeurs in total."
Bordeaux 2008 - vores anbefaling
