2015 Mullineux Iron Syrah Swartland Mullineux Wines

Tricky to pick this may be, as it can get over-ripe in hot years, but the Mullineux nailed this in 2015. Grown on blood red soils, it's a dense, rich, powerful wine with plenty of tannins, edging towards a Cornas in style. The effort was worth it. 2019-28.

Spice box, blueberry compote and blackberry puree. Hot stones, vanilla, sweet meats and incense follow and spring out of the glass. The palate is very supple, all thanks to the juicy tannins. And the tangy acidity lifts the blue fruit to a long, chewy finish. Drink in 2020.

Når muligheden er der, så skal du slå til. Hvor får man seks år gamllem syrah fra oversøiske lande? Syrah, der ovenikøbet holder og har udviklet alderskompleksitet. Støvet og grillkulpræget næse med cigarblade og cedertræsæske, røgelse og røde bær. Meget fin, fornem og slank statur, der minder lidt om en adelsmand på et maleri fra 1700-tallet. Er prisen for høj, så tag duoens almindelige Syrah 2016, som optræder som Hermitage på sydafrikansk, syrah på africaan med hvide liljer, brombærsaft, røget kød, friskhed og nellike.

94P+: Vinen kommer - ikke overraskende fra jernholdige jorder og er en mandig, mørk, alvorlig affære. Masser af oliven og brombær, rank struktur - og stadig ung efter min mening.

This Syrah has an old- world soul, with pronounced earthy scents of game, tobacco leaf, chicory root and loads of white pepper that grace notes of black cherry and raspberry fruit. The velvety palate boasts smooth yet enduring tannins, while flavors of charred animal hide, cherry skin and forest floor carry through to the long, evolving finish, ending with a soft sanguine accent. While it's enticing now, it should mature gracefully through 2028.

Still youthfully compact, but the core of plum, blackberry and black currant fruit shows lots of juicy energy. Black tea, charcoal and singed alder notes flow through the finish. Needs time to stretch out fully. Best from 2019 through 2026.-J.M.
