Cloudy Bay-vinmagerens egne vine

Kevin Judd har gennem et kvart århundrede været som chief winemaker hos legendariske Cloudy Bay, hvor han satte Sauvignon Blanc fra Marlborough på vinverdenskortet. I 2009 realiserede Kevin en mangeårig drøm, og etablerede sit soloprojekt, Greywacke. Greywacke er en type småsten, som man finder overalt i New Zealands flodlejer, og som også er rigt forekommende i Marlboroughs vinmarker, hvor druerne til Greywacke- vinene dyrkes.

Marlboroughs bedste underområder

Druerne til Greywacke-vinene stammer fra Wairau og Southern Plains, som er to af Marlborough-distriktets bedste underområder. Her har Kevin Judd tegnet langtidskontrakter med en lille håndfuld af de bedste vindyrkere, som fremstiller druer i præcis den stil og kvalitet, som han søger. For Kevin Judd er det afgørende, at druerne er så aromatiske som overhovedet muligt, og at de har en syngende frisk syre til at afbalancere frugten.

Greywacke Chardonnay

Druerne til Greywacke Chardonnay er håndhøstet I Brancott Valley i Southern Valleys iMarlborough. Efter en nænsom presning er vinen gæret på vildgæren, og efterfølgende lagret på franske egetræsfade, heraf 25% nye fade. Greywacke Chardonnay har en stor bouquet af tropisk frugt med strejf af nødder og vanilje. Smagen er fyldig og komplekst sammensat, og munder ud i en skøn frisk finish med mineralske noter..

Fruit sourced from the lower reaches of the Brancott Valley and Fairhall, grown in gravelly, clay-loam soils, the remainder coming from Rapaura, grown in young alluvial soils containing high proportions o f New Zealand's ubiquitous greywacke river stones. Vineyards hand-picked separately at high ripeness levels and whole-bunch pressed using very low maceration press cycles. Juice settled and racked to French oak barriques (part new). Spontaneous, warm and slow indigenous-yeast fermentation. Occasional lees stirring and full malo. More than a year in barrel and then several months on lees in tank. pH 3.2. Seems a little more toasty than the 2013. Great acidity combined with rich, toasty spice. Full and rich but without heaviness. Long, lime- fresh finish. A definite and well-mastered style choice."
